Marine stingers - Queensland
This would have been horrific for all involved, but thankfully doesn't happen often -
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...section=justin For another stinger victim a few weeks ago the consequences weren't as extreme because he was wearing a protective suit - http://www.whitsundaytimes.com.au/st...arine-stinger/ Of course, tourists should always note local conditions and take recommended precautions, but the main dangers in the water anywhere in Australia are probably drug or alcohol intoxication and failing to make proper allowances for fitness limitations. Friends had a great time in Port Douglas in Far North Queensland - well within the seasonal stinger zone - just a few weeks ago, making good use of the pool at their rental property and taking advantage of pre-booked web specials to snorkel on an inner isle and outer reef with long established Quicksilver Cruises - 'good value and well done, if a little crowded' was the verdict. |
farrermog: thanks for this - the young girl was so fortunate people acted quickly, knew what to do, and had vinegar on hand.
As points of note for readers - marine stingers (box jellyfish) are not found in deep ocean water or over the Great Barrier Reef, which lies some distance out to sea. Rather, they are a coastal phenomenon, breeding in estuarine waters of the mainland. Also, their occurrence is seasonal - generally from November to April in Australia. |
Just a flesh wound for world's best job winner -

No stinger suit, Hamilton Island, not the outer reef, pretty much to be expected. You'd think someone would have wised this bloke up by now, or maybe he doesn't listen.

Pat, not having been to GBR yet, but going in March, I thought the stingers were only near shore and not on the reef (Hamilton Island?). Does everyone wear a stinger suit? We plan on staying at Lindeman Island; is this the "outer reef"? Thank you.

WindsurfingGail, Hi
Neither Lindeman or Hamilton Islands are on outer barrier reef, whilst dangerous marine stingers are more prevalent on coastal areas and saltwater sections of entrances of rivers/creeks on mainland, offshore islands are not untouched. It would be wise to wear a stinger suit between about November-May. |
Thank you very much!
