Now that everyone seems to have settled down, I'll jump back in!
I have really appreciated everyone's advice in this forum, particularly locals like Liz and Alan, who know the things we'll never see in a tourist brochure, and are happy to share them with the rest of us. How else could we have learned about things such as the hotel built under the expressway (lol), ahead of time!!
I tried contacting one hotel, as Alan suggested, to see whether they would honour the wotif.com price in March/April, but the answer was no, the lower price mentioned was only available through the internet.

Hi Julie

I am joining in "kinda late" but might I add the website Needitnow.com.au to your search. We used this site often when we were touring around Australia and New Zealand and found some really good last minute rates. Sometimes you can also go to the parent hotel's site and learn of specials there. Accor hotels has a really good site.

We never had tiny rooms - in general they were larger than most rooms in Europe!!

when we were in Sydney we stayed near Circular Quay on the first part of our trip. In fact we blew the budget by staying at Quay West for the first couple nights. On our return from NZ we stayed at the Southern Cross which was in the heart of the city and was much, much cheaper. I don't regret staying at Quay West - it was a spectacular part of our trip. I also don't regret staying at Southern Cross cause we were able to get around very easy and the people at the hotel were so pleasant.

Sydney uses the waterfront as a perfect play for tourism - Circular Quay is magnetic - so much goes on there. I can only recommend that you stay near there FIRST!!!!

That's my 2 cents worth and I thank Alan and Liz for the assistance they've given so very many times to all of us.
