Kuringai Chase National Park, Sydney
 

Is this park accessible by Public transport, esp. Bus or Ferry. We dont plan to drive while in Sydney and this park was highly recommended by an Aussie friend.
Is it worth a day's trip?

Lovely place. And websites given by Di will, I'm sure, detail all the entry points.

Not far from the CBD and, yes, accessible by public transport.

But .. and I never thought I'd hear myself say this .. you might be better hiring a car for a day if you really want to explore. If the "we" is two it would cost you more; if the "we" is four, probably not.

But don't use a big name company like Avis or Hertz, use a local outfit like Bayswater Rentals. They are very competitive.

Otherwise, my best tip for keeping faith with the public transport idea, is to take the bus up to Palm Beach (L90) takes a little over an hour. Then ferry over Pittwater and get off at the stop for The Basin. You can swim and there are bushwalking trails.

Return the same way.

Thanks Chimani, I'd prefer to go by Public Transport - safer and also gives a chance to see the scenery too.
Regarding Palm Beach - is the lighthouse there accessible?

yeah walk up to the lighthouse..on weekends they have guided tours.

if you are english visit the surf club at north palm where they shoot 'home and away'

take something to bbq over to the basin..use the gas bbq over there.walk up to the aboriginal engravings.

If you're staying in the city, the Palm Beach bus leaves from Wynyard in York St.

Or catch a ferry to Manly from Circular Quay in the city, then a bus further north to Palm Beach.

How does this park compare to the Royal National Park? That seems to be easier to get to.

What makes you think the Royal National Park is easier to get to?

There seems to be a Train to Cronulla (hope this is right!)- takes only 30 minutes and then a ferry ride to reach Royal National Park

Yes, that's right - from Cronulla you can catch a ferry across the bay to Bundeena.
Go to www.cronullaferries.com.au to find out more about their service, and what's available in the Royal National Park.
When you go to the National Parks website www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au you can click on the NSW map for the Sydney area, then choose Royal National Park from the drop-down menu, then peruse all the info.
The two parks (Royal and Kur-ring-ai) are both similar in what you will see, so for you the train and ferry trip would definitely be the simpler and more scenic option.

Yes - there is a train to Cronulla - but if it takes 30 mins then I must adjust my watch (more like 50).

Cronulla is a place worth visiting for itself if you have days to spare - otherwise - you need to factor in time to get from stn to ferry/how long will you have to wait for a connex. And then Bundeena is a small town - you'll need to walk out of it.

Thanks for the input, Chimani. I think I will go with the Kuringgai Chase park, since it is quite close to Palm beach and can be combined in one visit.
If time permits, I will try to fit in another day (?) for Royal Natl Park also
