Kangaroo Island or Tasmania?
If I am only able to go to one additional place in my packed itinerary (sydney, ayers rock, cairns, melbourne) ... would you pick Kangaroo Island or Tasmania?
(I dont know anything about either!) Thanks! |
Depends on how packed your itinerary is. How many days do you have to spare for either of them? And how were you thinking of getting there, and from where?
|
Well Kangaroo Island is an island trip from Adelaide, Tasmania is a different ballgame altogether as vastly larger. Extreme difference between the 2.
If you are in Cairns why not add in Port Douglas or Cape Tribulation etc |
Kangaroo Island is good for a quick overnight or even just a day trip - and it's pretty easy to get to from Adelaide.
Tasmania takes longer to get to unless you are flying and is very large. I spent a week in just Tasmania and still missed a number of areas. I loved my time on both KI and Tassie, but for completely different reasons. It's not like you can compare apples to apples with these 2. |
Thank you all for your replies.
We are going on our honeymoon and wanted to get a taste of everything we possibly could while Down under. As of now, we are spending about 4 days in Sydney, 2 days Ayers Rock, 4 days Cairns/Pt Douglas/Palm Cove (havent decided specifics in this area), and then have about 6 days left in our itinenary, with wanting to go to Melbourne at the end (so 4 days there). So had about 2 1/2 days go to see another part of Australia. Any recommendations? A place to get to from Cairns and to go to Melbourne after. Thanks!!!! |
If you want to end your trip in Melbourne and you have 2 1/2 days, I would really recommend you spend a little time exploring the Great Ocean Road. Seeing the Twelve Apostles and London Bridge was great - and the coastline is beautiful. Lot of cute small beach towns you could stay at right along the Great Ocean Road.

Your itinerary seems to have a lot of back tracking. Why not start Sydney, then fly to Cairns then to Ayers Rock and then either Adelaide with a day trip to Kangaroo Island or Tasmania for a couple of days then back to Melbourne. Your flights will take up quite a bit of travel time so try not to take on too many flights.

Thanks for pointing out the backtracking. I do realize I am back tracking quite a bit but just due to how our flights worked out, and wanting to end in Melbourne this was the way the trip worked out. We are going away on our honeymoon so I am also trying to combine some adventure with spurts of relaxation!
