Kakadu, Katherine Gorge, & Litchfield

We will be visiting Kakadu, Katherine Gorge & Litchfield at the end of August. We plan to do walks at Ubirr & Nourlangie in Kakadu, Windolf & Leliyn trails at Katherine, as well as trails in Litchfield.

Do we need to pack our hiking boots, or will sturdy trainers be okay?

Some hardcore bushwalkers swear that a pair of Dunlop Volleys will suffice for any walk in Australia.

The more prudent could refer to

Having walked at Ubirr and Nourlangie and in Litchfield I'd say sturdy trainers are fine, just about all the walks in Litchfield are very easy in trainers, but I can't comment on Katherine

Good Luck

I second the advice of MikeD -- sturdy trainers are just fine for hikes in Kakadu and Litchfield. I didn't get to Katherine Gorge, so can't advise about that, but I suspect the walks there are no different.

My husband brought hiking boots and wore them because he had them -- but he admits that they were unnecessary (and took alot of room in his baggage). I was in trainers (or, as I would call them, sneakers) with good tread on the soles and had no problems at all. In fact, on our 5-week trip around Australia, which included lots of hiking, I never wished I had brought hiking boots.

But do take lots of water!

Hi Evostick,
I've done some walking in all those areas and just wore sneakers (trainers). They're lighter, will dry quicker when wet and you can use them on the rest of your trip.
