Hi Pat,

It is possible to both in one day if you are able to drive yourself or pick up a guide or small tour group to take you where you want to go.

On the way to Rotorua (about half way between Tauranga & Rotorua) is a place called Longridge Park. Here they offer Jet Boating on the Kaituna river as well as a farm park, self-drive 4X4 vehicles & eels to feed etc. Then in Rotorua there are all manner of Touristy things to look at - but to me, the best bits are free - the local golf course has a number of boiling mud pools and steam vents which are virtually beside the roadway, plus there is a boiling water spring near the centre of town outside the Musuem.

Aside from these, a friend recently went on a trip out to White Island which is off the coast of Whakatane (less than an hours drive from Tauranga) to walk around this very active volcano. It's claim to fame is that it is the most accessable live active island volcano in the world. A trip out there & tour of the island costs NZ$110 - a bargain IMO! Now on my "must do" list!

Enjoy

nzers
