Jelly Fish in late April?
 

I did a search on Box Jelly Fish on this board and did a google search and learned that the jelly fish season goes from October to April. When they say April, do they mean all of April or the beginning part of April? We were planning on going on the very last week of April. Do you think the jelly fish will be gone by then? We have wanted to go to Aus for some time now, and we will be sad if we can't venture into the water.

that's a hard one and nobody can give you a definite answer.
Seasons are different from year to year and it depends mainly on water currents and water temperatures.
However if you go offshore and out to the reef you will be ok.

I could be wrong but I always thought that the jellyfish came in, oh, about a week after the full moon. so if I;m right then check the full moon in april, check your dates and, well, make a prediction, go swim and see how it feels.

Nah seriously, they tell me that if you swim with nylon stockings that you won't get hurt. I don;t know how to cover the body and face though

The box jellyfish were still swanning about when we were in Port Douglas the first week in May 2 years ago.

There was a large netted enclosure in which one could safely swim.

No box jelly fish out in the gorgeous Whitsundays where we found the snorkeling superb.

As OzMike says, it varies from year to year and place to place - last year it started November and they didn't bring the nets in on some beaches until June.

There's a stinger proof swimming enclosure at Airlie Beach at entrance to Whitsundays and there has been an irkandji fatality at Hamilton Island. You probably were further out though, Andrew.

Thank you for all your replies. I guess we'll just have to go and see. At least at the GBR there will be no issues.

Was in Port Douglas April 19 thru the 26,2005 and the stringer enclosures were in place. It was also pretty windy then! I wore a stinger suit while diving out at Agincourt Reef as well.
