Japan in May 98 any suggestions???

Am going to Japan for the first time in May 98
ANy suggestions as to where to visit , train travelling etc. Any info would be appreciated

I also plan on visiting Japan in May of 98. I hear Kyoto is beautiful and of course you must see Tokyo. A friend of mine is living there through August of next year. As she visits different cities she plans on letting me know which places to see. Oh, she also climbed Mt. Fuji. I don't think we can do that in May though. Don't forget the '98 Winter Olympics are in Nagano in February.

Just came back from my second trip to Japan. Hit Tokyo, Kamakura, Nikko in March. Went to Kyoto, Nara, Takayam and Kanazawa in October. After seeing all that, I recommend spending as much time in Kyoto as possible. Also while in Tokyo try to squeeze in trips to Kamakura and Nikko. In Nikko stayed a an inexpensive inn, Pension Turtle Inn Annex or something like that. Very clean, good breakfast and great bath. Have fun!

Haven't been to Japan yet, but planning a visit in April to Kyoto. Heard from friends that you should really stay in a ryokan (Japanese style accomodation) near hot springs if possible. We're still investigating this option ourselves.

Be sure to pay a visit to the city of Kamakura, which is about an hour by train from central Tokyo, if only to see the Great Buddha of Kamakura. You have seen it in picture books when you were a kid, probably; it's a big, green, serene, sitting buddha statue made of bronze. It photographs very well and to kids makes them feel that they have truly "arrived" in Asia since it is impressive, rather than subtle like many traditional Japanese sights.

I have seen it a number of times and still get a kick out of it. If you are traveling with a friends, be sure to keep what you will see a secret from them and make them close their eyes after they pay the admission at the entrance to the Buddha. Have them open their eyes when they get past the hedge near the entrance that screens it from view.

I will be in Tokyo this December (16 - 24).

I also planning to visit japan for first time this june or july . i will be staying in tokyo with my girlfriend. she lives in nakano-ku. i am interest in meeting other americans while there, espeacially one's who can speak japanese. I am planning a 21day train trip throughout the country use a foreigner's only discount pass which can be purchase through the Japan International Travel Bearu. Please responce if interest in travel together or meeting.

The JR pass from Japan Rail is one of the great deals on earth. Get it. I lived in Japan for three years and it is a fascinating place. Kyoto is a beautiful city, as is Osaka. An often overlooked city with a nice castle is Nagoya. Nagoya is a lot like a Western city, having been remodeled by the US Air Force in the mid '40s, but is very nice. Kamakura is indeed a must see. Staying at ryokans, especially in Kyoto is the way to go. Cheaper and verrrrry Japanese. The trains can get crowded, but that's half the fun.

Been to Japan twice. As a foreigner, it is a good idea to buy a Japan Rail Pass. Kyoto is a nice place, lots of temples. The one you should see is the Golden Pavillion. I heartily recommend an earlier mail that suggest you visit Nikko. It is the most beautiful place I could find (to date) in Japan. To get there, take a train from Tokyo to Utsonomiya (hope I spell that correct) and changeover to an local rail. Ryokans (inns) are the cheapest way to stay in Japan but be warned: they lock the place up at night, so guests have to come back before then. Closing hours are between 10pm-midnight. If you don't mind spending a bit more, you can try business hotels in large cities. They are open like 7-11. There are cheap business hotels and there are expensive business hotels. Do look around. I book a room at an expensive one only to find another hotel 50 meters down the road at two-third the rates.

I am currently living in Tokyo on a short term work assignment. I plan to be here until June 98. I haven't done much travelling outside of Tokyo yet and am always interested in meeting English speakers. Would appreciate any advice on what to do - in and out of Tokyo. And would love to meet travellers coming to Tokyo while I'm here.

Hi! I am also planning a trip to Japan in May. I will be outside of Tokyo for the majority of the time and plan to do trips from there as my home base. After lots of reading, I will go to Kyoto for a long weekend as well. Are you planning on learning any Japanese beforehand??? Happy travels. Any suggestions for travel are welcome!!!

<BR>I expect to arrive in Yokohama in September after disembarking from the Crystal Harmony Cruise Ship. I plan to either rent a car or use Rail Passes to get around and plan to go to Kamakura, Hakone and Takayama before returning through Tokyo. I have been to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto before so would like to see the interior a bit more. Also would like to try the Japanese type Inns or Ryokans. Have you experienced them?
