Itinerary help

I thought I had my whole 3-week trip planned out but now I am having some doubts. We are traveling in September and I am happy with the second part of my trip (Cairns, diving, Lizard Island). What I am not sure about is the first 8 days.
We were plannig to go to Broome/Kimberley for 4 days and then to Darwin/Kakadu for 3 days. Is this the right decision? The Broome part is turning out to be very expensive and I am not sure if it is worth it. I definitely don't want to spend any time in any city but would prefer to see the nature and the wildlife. What would you change in my itinerary? Should we perhaps substitute Broome by Brisbane (Lamington NP & Moreton Island)? Can you suggest anything else?

Perhaps you could see more of the Northern Territory instead of Broome. You could go to Litchfield NP or further afield to Katherine to see the beautiful gorge. Or drive/fly/bus to Alice Springs to see the rock, McDonnell Ranges etc etc.

If you don't get many other answers, try re-wording your subject header and include something like "Broome - worth the visit?" That might help.

N.W. Western Australia is very expensive to get to and I am not sure that I would want to go in September as its getting too hot even then - its a winter destination I think.
You don't say what City you are entering Australia through because that may help in making suggestions for you.
I would tend to think of something near the city you are coming through and adding time in Darwin/Kakadu.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am arriving to Sydney and have 5 days before my trip to Darwin. I would really prefer to go somewhere for 4 days and not to stay in Sydney. I would like it to be a new location but not the rock. I was thinking of Broome, Brisbane, Kangaroo Island, or Hobart. I would go to KI or Hobart if it was December but hesitant to go in September. Any suggestions?

alisa, Tasmania sounds like the best bet in terms of rounding out your trip, and 4 days would give you a chance to see some of the countryside (4 days in Hobart itself is too much, of course).

For the record, in September (early Spring), Hobart's average minimum is 6C, maximum 15C, average number of rainy days 6. For Launceston in the north of the state the numbers are 4-13C, 6 rainy days. That's from www.weatherbase.com, which also supplies temps in F. Depends on what you're used to and your weather tolerance, of course, but I'd call that brisk rather than cold.

While I'm not a great fan of KI it has its fans - but if you go there, make sure to give yourself a couple of days in Adelaide.

Alisa, out of the four places you mention I would choose Hobart - easy to get to and lots to see and do. If you like markets, the one on Sat in Salamanca Place is good. Battery Point is a nice area to stay in, very old-world English feel, low-key B&B type places. There is an airbridge walk south of Hobart, Port Arthur, Richmond and Ross which are historic small towns, etc etc.

Have you considered Melbourne, capital of Victoria. You could spend half your time enjoying the sights,eg - National Trust house properties, Captain Cooks cottage in the Fitzroy Gardens, Botanical Gardens/museums etc. incl. a visit to Healesville wildlife Sanctuary in the nearby hills, then combine the remaining time with visits to country Victoria, i.e. a day trip by train to Ballarat, Daylesford, Bendigo, via Spencer Street station. This would combine the best of all worlds. Other readers may help with similar Melbourne/country Victoria locations. Alisa23,enjoy Australia. PJ

Here is another vote for Tasmania - its a lovely place and so different from the mainland, you would certainly be seeing a difference between it and Darwin and Cairns. Besides its Australia's best kept secret and there is soooo much to do. Do a search on Tasmania and see what others have said.
It should be at its best in September with all the spring flowers out and "everyone" seems to have lovely gardens. I have been in Spring and its was a sheer delight.
