Italy vacation. Trains?
 

Arriving in Rome. Want to spend two days in Florence, two days in Venice and and the remaining days in Positano (Amalfi coast) and than back to Rome to fly out. Is the train the best option? If so which trains? How do I get locations and schedules to fit this vacation plan?

If you tell us how many total days you actually have on the ground (do not count the day you leave home, arrive in Italy or depart Italy) people can make recos.

There is good train travel between Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples. On the Amalfi coast you have partial local train, local bus, a few ferries and taxis.

What you will need depends on your budget and itinerary.

Regardless, a trip combining Venice with Positano on the AC would be better planned with multi-city flights, arriving in Venice and departing from Naples or visa-versa, not flying into and out of Rome.

When is this trip?

Your basic question (based on your thread title) seems to be about trains between the destinations. As nytraveler mentioned, there is good train service between the big cities. There is also air service between Venice and Naples which might be an efficient way to connect the geographic extremes in your itinerary. From the Naples airport, you can take a shared shuttle service, taxi or private driver to Positano, but there are also public transportation options which, not surprisingly, take longer and involve multiple steps.
