Islands near Cairns

On our trip to Australia in September (my husband, 8 year old daughter and myself),
should we spend our entire week in Port Douglas (at By the Sea Apartments) or should we consider staying on an island for 2-3 nights?

Is it worth the cost of staying on an island since we don't dive--or should we stay in Port Douglas and do day trips? Our budget max is $400 per night (including meals).

Judy,
Let us know a bit more about your interests to help us help you decide if it is worth while spending the time overnighting on an island.
If it is just to be by the beach then I would think that a week booking discount would b worth while staying in one place.

My daughter needs a complete gluten free diet. Often all inclusive resorts can cater to gf diets. It would be a real treat for me to not cook on my vacation. I was hoping to find an all inclusive resort (like we enjoy near Cozumel, Mexico). Our interests are mostly beach related (maybe snorkeling) but not scuba.

Do you want a resort or an apartment?

I really don't want to cook by choice but to create gluten free meals, I often end up shopping and cooking while on vacation. if we could find an all inclusive resort which could accommodate a gf diet, that would we perfect. We must also consider budget--transportation to and from an island plus resort charges might be more than we can spend (but for something fabulous we might splurge for 2 nights).
