Is It Mad To Visit Flinders Ranges In December?
 

Hi!<BR>Most of the guide book will advice tp visit Flinders R. during winter or spring time, but we are visiting South Australia in December and would like to visit the Flinders R. The main concern of course is the weather as we will be travelling with children.<BR>Is a normal car OK to travel to this area or must we get a 4X4? What are the towns to stay overnight and what are the main attractions?<BR>How many days do we require? We have around three days the most---is it sufficient?<BR><BR>Thanks!<BR><BR>TL<BR>

Flinders Ranges will be really hot in December, 35 degrees or higher. There are so many little towns throughout flinders ranges with accommodation, you would be best to go to search engine and bring up South Australia Tourism Commission or just enter Flinders Ranges and see what it brings up. Definitely visit Wilpena Pound, but there is still the factor of the weather, it will be HOT!!! Best of luck.

I say go for it, I did it in late november<BR><BR>First, 3 days are not really sufficient but you will see a lot in 3 days - its a stunning area. As long you have a big supply of water and a radio you'll be ok. <BR><BR>The weather will be hot, but its not unbearable. the obvious safeguards (wide brim hat, sun cream, proper walking boots and mozzie repellant). <BR><BR>There are some beautiful gorges with great hiking tracks to visit and lots of wildlife to spot (yellow footed rock wallabys are a treat to see). Do your hiking early morning/late afternoon and limit your distances to a couple of Km.<BR><BR>A 4x4 is essential to visit the best places as they are only accessable via unsealed road. Great places to visit (little towns and homesteads) include Quorn, Hawker, Parachilner and Whipena.<BR><BR>Look out for Aboriginal rock paintings and fossils, and enjoy swimming in the billabongs. Just take care, make sure people know where you are and keep a spare supply of everything!
