Ichecked with Hertz a week or so ago and provided your Licence is written in English, you don't need an International for them.

We rented in several Aussie locations earlier this year, the subject of an int'l license never even came up, we showed a US license and cc - that was it.

We've never needed an international license to drive in any country - Australia, NZ, Europe, UK, the Middle East, etc (although I just found out yesterday I need one to drive in Indonesia, where I live - who knew?).
