International Driver's License

Do I need an international driver's licence to rent a car in Australia?

I would imagine so, dknudsen, unless you happen to have an Australian driver's licence! I would think that the rules would be exactly the same as in your own country.

Actually, I don't think you do. When I arrived here a few years ago I know I didn't have an int'l license (although it probably never hurts) - just plopped down my NC license and off I went, completely panic stricken about driving on the other side of the road - which turned out to be no big deal. I checked the Budget website, and they stated all that is needed is a vald license & a credit card for any & all drivers.

An international driver's license isn't a legal document, per se. That's why AAA and other agencies can issue them. The only function of an International Driver's License is as a standard translation of your license in case you're pulled over. Useful in non-English countries but redundant and not necessay in Australia, NZ, UK, etc.

You don't need an international driver's license.

Hi,

Please check with www.australia.com and the rental company from whom you plan to rent.

DO NOT FORGET THAT THEY DRIVE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD WHICH IS THEIR RIGHT SIDE.

I just thought of inserting some humor!
