Insects
What is the insect situation like in French Polynesia? My fiancee is somewhat allergic to mosquito bites. Will she have a problem in late September? Thanks.

We're going in February and I've been a little concerned myself because I, too, have some sensitivity. From what I've read and researched, it sounds like the worst problems are around Garden bungalows or in places in-land, while there are fewer problems in overwater bungalows.

Here's what I'm going to do: take some coils to burn in our bungalow (which will be a "beach" bungalow) and bring lots of DEET. REI sells "jungle juice" that is nearly 100% DEET. Let me tell you, I've never had a bite when that stuff has been on me. It's not the most pleasant smell, but it beats the agony of limbs swelling from mosquito bites!

Hopefully someone who has traveled there during our summer months will be able to let you know if mosquitos are a real problem in September. I'd guess not.

Unfortunately, the travel industry, government, etc., never gives you the REAL story! Not only are mosquitos a big problem, but at one time there was an epidemic of DENGUE FEVER on these islands as well (and there still could be!), something that you would NOT want to contract, I can assure you!

Take my word for it. Dengue fever is alive and well in Moorea.

I can tell you from personal experience it is not pleasant to have l05 fever and be sick as a dog.

Had I know this before going I would have gone somewhere else.

We spent 2 weeks last Feb. on Moorea in a beach house and had no problems with skeeter bites. In fact no problems at all along the shore during daylight hours but use caution when going inland, into the mountains or around waterfalls. When dining out in the evening most restaurants are open air and the lights draw critters so its a good idea to wear a repellant or thay will eat your legs under the table.Hope this is of some help.

We just returned and of course there are mosquitos. But if you are worried because you are allergic it may not be a problem. I am allergic also (the bites get so big at home that they bruise). I got bites but they were tiny and didn't really bother me. I figure that it was because the mosquitos are different and I took Allegra every day. Just bring Deep Woods Off or Cutter with you and wear it when you go out. It was very windy while we were there and had no problems. Where are you going?
