How about Danny Deckchair with Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto. Wonderful (IMHO) quirky and great scenery.

"Newsfront" is a true classic but there's always a personal filter applied, don't you think, when suggesting additions for lists - like what seems to fit the moment? Is the focus on Aussie movies, or "great" Aussie movies, or "significant" Aussie movies, or movies of interest to a visitor, etc, etc.

I could also have mentioned "The Oyster Catcher" (great Hawkesbury scenery but a slight film), or "Aussie Rules", or "The Bank", or "The Cars that ate Paris" or "Cosi" (filmed just down the road) or "Crackerjack" or even "Caddie".

And where's "Gallipoli"?

And I've seen some interesting stuff over the years on TV late night - would have been ABC or SBS - that I can't remember the name of. One in particular - early 20s girl of Aboriginal heritage, been away for a while returns to the family home - a house somewhere in the Botany area, I think. Others return too as there has been a death and a decision has to be made about the property - sell or keep. Features a cat, a big storm, and involvement from the neighbours. Memory a bit sketchy but does it ring any bells - Neil, Alan?

Fuzzylogic, now I have a sad confession to make: if it was made after about 1970 ("PBM": post-Barry McKenzie), I wouldn't have a clue. It was round about that time that I practically gave up on movies, and nowadays I spend most of my time watching old black-and-whites on VHS or DVD.

I did manage to see "Rabbit Proof Fence", which impressed me with its widescreen cinematography, but that, and a very disturbing one called "The Boys", are about the only Australian movies I have seen since the new millennium came around!

I rather wish that the discussion had included made-for-TV Aussie movies, as I think there have been a few good ones in that category. "Joh's Jury" held me spellbound, and I also liked "The Dismissal". Not the remake of "On the Beach", however, with the clever circular photography and the happy ending tacked on the end (I'm surprised they didn't discover a last-minute antidote to the radiation poisoning)!

Realistically I think we're looking for movies that an American would have some chance of finding in a good video hire shop, which narrows the field a bit. I found an Oz TV series called "Brides of Christ" in a US book of video reviews, which surprised me. (My wife, who claims to still bear scars from her own experience, felt that show conveyed a very benign impression of life in a 1960s convent school. As a public school product I wouldn't know, but as a bloke I did notice that the nuns were a lot better looking than their real-life counterparts over here on Planet Earth.)

Sorry, fuzzylogic, that one doesn't ring a bell. I haven't stopped going to Australian movies, but the way the local cheer squad trumpets some very ordinary offerings puts me off. I let myself get talked into "Somersault", and addle-headed political correctness was oozing off the screen. The gay character, the Aboriginal family, the immigrant family - all handsome, wise, warm and sensitive; the young Anglo-Celtic males - uncouth, drunken yobbos. Spare me - if I'm looking for a sermon I'll go to church, thanks.
