In Perth area can we pet Koalas & Roos?
Are there any places around Perth or Southwest Australia where we can pet Koalas and Kangaroos?
|
When we were in Perth and looking for kangaroos--friends sent us to a large cemetery, which was actually like a lovely park. There were kangaroos everywhere, and while they were wild, they were used to, and not too afraid of people. You could get within 4-5 feet of them. It was great! I do not know the name of the cemetery, but it was just west off of the Mitchell Freeway not too far out from the center of Perth. Surely someone in Perth could figure out what I'm referring to as it was a very large park. I do not know of koalas--think they are native to Eastern Australia. Good luck.

The cemetary you are referring to is called Pinnarroo Valley Memorial Park.
It is on Whitfords Avenue, beach side of the Mitchell fwy exit at Whitfords Ave.
It is 5 mins drive from my home & yes there are kangaroos there. We also have kangaroos on a paddock across the road from the Woodvale High School clearly visible early evenings in summer.
There are kangaroos & koalas at Yanchep National Park, some kangaroos roam freely there but the koalas are in enclosures as the rangers don't think it is good for the koalas to be handled by lots of people. You can have the rangers hold the koalas standing next to you so you can take a photo. There are many wildlife places around the state, one just before Mandurah and the Alpaca farm in Denmark has kangaroos, thats all I can think of at the moment.

Just got back from Australia, where I learned Koalas sleep 20 hours a day, eat for 4, and move around for 5 minutes a day. They are weak, and easily injured, so most places won`t let you hold them, but you can pet them if a ranger holds them. I would be wary about getting too close to a kangaroo. Those hind legs are powerful.
