If you had to choose one destination in Fiji...

what would that be and why?

The Yasawa Island Resort for it's limited amount of guests, good accommodations, service and excellent cuisine. It's a beautiful resort about 25 min. plane ride from Nadi, to a small undeveloped island with lovely people and beautiful surroundings. Your plane lands on a grass strip where you are greeted with a refreshing drink, a lovely flower lei, and beautiful singing from the locals Then it's off to the resort. At the time we were there the resort had 16 bures located a few feet from the beach. Nicely appointed with lots of privacy. There are lots of water activities to do, or easy hikes around the island or time to sit back and relax. The main restuarant and lounge area are very nice and a great place to gather in the evenings for a drink or chat with other guests before dinner. All in all a wonderful place to spend a vacation.

Vatulele.......for almost the exact same reasons that DE said about Yasawa! You have lots of great places to chose from in Fiji.

We have been through the Yasawa Island group and are familiar with the locations of both the Yasawa Island Resort and Turtle Island on a Blue Lagoon Cruise after we spent 9 days at Matangi Island Resort on Matangi Island on an earlier visit to Fiji. We also spent 7 days on Beqa during our last visit. So far the more tropical feel around the north of Fiji near Taveuni appeals to us more than the dryer areas around the Tasawa group. Further our intrest is warm water, snorkeling, and small intimate, comfortable family type islands such as Guana Island in the BVI.<BR>http://www.guana.com. While we found that snorkling in Fiji anywhere on our trips was only so so compared to places we been some 35 years ago, I think the variety of things to see in the water is much varied in the north of Fiji, particularly the coral. However you do need to go by boat to see the best coral. Mantagi has been in a local family for two generations, this makes it very unusual for Fiji compared to others developed by foreign interests. It is smaller and more intimate than the major top resorts and also the price for us is a much greater value. It is all of the comforts that we require, good food and a wonderful group of people about. Here we can be part of nature in good comfort and with good food. Unfortunately, we have reached the point where unlimited booze in the price is of no value anymore. There was a time when this would have mattered as our tastes in wine and other stuff was not on the inexpensive side. Also, since we do not dive the all inclusive features of some places are of limited interest. Thus Matangi island is dear to our hearts and this is our choice. http://matangiisland.com.

In the above, I forgot to add as follows: In the same price range and class, due to location, I very much agree with Peggy as I feel that Vatulele would suit us more than the Yasawa Island Resort or Turtle Island.

We sure fell in love with Taveuni - the waterfalls and coastal trails, the great SCUBA diving, the interesting small towns. Can't compare it to the Yasawas, though, as we never went there.
