How "springy" is sping?

Yes, we are used to snow, ice, storms, ect. during spring in Minnesota, but what about September on the South Island? We've heard there's great snow this year. Is there snow on the ground everywhere, or just at higher altitudes? Am wondering if we will be muddy, wet and miserable while trying to enjoy all those wonderful outdoor activities that usually don't involve snow. We have tickets for Mid-late Sept. and can't change the dates!

NZ weather is hard to predict at the best of times.
Spring is generally okay temperature wise. You should find it moderate - warm.
A cold southerly can catch us out anytime but even so, I don't think you would find it uncomfortably cold.

Snow won't be an issue, only in mid-winter does it snow ( occasionally) down in the coastal areas.

Rain? well, if I could predict that it would be a miracle.
It shouldn't be excessively wet at that time of year.
Just come prepared for a bit of everything... pack as if you were planning to visit San Francisico, wear layers because believe it or not, you are going to hit some hot days now and then.

Enjoy your trip.

It will be fantastic, snow on the higher altitudes and can still get some dumps in september. It is terrific this year so the scenery will be doubly breath taking. You should'nt be muddy but you will be if you want to do some treks in the bush of course. Bring good ankle boots with tyre tred soles for walking in the country areas. however as we have some of the best outdoor gear in the world you might want to have a little spend up of outdoor clothing when you get here.

The South Island of NZ will be pretty much like Minnesota but less cold in the Spring though equally unpredictable.
However you are used to that type of climate and depending on what "other outdoor activities" you are referring to you should be OK. There will be plenty of snow on the mountains but not in the towns, though it may feel like it temperature wise. I don't think you can be sure of not having icy winds etc till after Christmas

Thanks, I'll take the boots, mittens, early winter coat and enjoy the fact that we're on the other side of the world. Going to be hard to leave this lovely summer weather here though....well, not that hard. Thanks again!
