How much did you pay to fly to Australia?

I'm just beginning to think about a trip to Australia, and I'm trying to get an idea of how much it would cost.

I would like to know how much an average round trip ticket from the east coast of the USA (DC) to Sydney would cost. Is one season cheaper than another. I'm open to any time of year.

How much did you pay? (you can post anonymously if you want)

Thanks.

Do a search on any of the travel websites testing different dates and you will get a good idea. the airlines do run specials from time to time. To visit at this time of year they were running fares of around $900 from LA.

My husband and I are flying from Tampa to Dallas to LA on American and then from LA to Syndey on Qantas. Our trip is in mid-October for 2 weeks. We used miles for my ticket, but my husband's ticket was paid for by his company since he is going on business. The cost was $1800 for a coach seat. Hope this helps.

I've made the trip back & forth from Roch. NY (certainly not an airline hub of any means)to Australia several times and have never paid $1800.00. The most I have had to pay is $1450. I had friends come visit recently who found a deal (thru her travel agent)for $1400 which included 4 nights at a hotel in Sydney. Just keep checking websites, travel agents, etc. My only advice is to fly Qantas. I took a United flight once and was really disappointed w/ the plane, the service - everything. I have heard from my family back in the U.S. that prices are high right now, and quotes for post-Olympic travel are hard to get. Some people think the prices might come down around Oct/Nov?? The other thing to keep in mind is that airfare between cities in Australia is relatively expensive when compared to the U.S. (lack of competition), however with the fx rate at such a low, 2000 looks like a good year to visit.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep checking the airline websites. I'd love to keep it under $1000.

I too am planning on going to Australia in the near future. I've picked Cairns as my base because I want to see the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

You want go cheap? If your single going as an "air couier". Check out http://www.aircouier.org or http://couier.org. Also http://wwww.adventure1.com/couier.htm

I live near LAX and could have gone earlier in the year for $400 round trip. One tip not mentioned up front, you have to fly from one on the major "hubs". In you case, NY or Chicago.
