How long on the Great Ocean Road
 

I'm wondering how long I should allow for a car trip on the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide. My travel agent has us staying in Port Fairy the first night, Robe the second night and travelling to the All Seasons Premier Barossa Valley REsort for one night before we head to Adelaide. then we spend one night there and one day on Kangaroo Island. Any comments?

Melbourne to Part Fairy is too long a drive to do in one day & be able to enjoy anything. You'll want to add at least one more night somewhere like Lorne or Apollo Bay

Ok Now I have looked at the website for Great Ocean Road and I'm thouroughly frustrated. How do I do this in less than a month? There is so much to see on one stretch of road. Does anyone have suggestions as to which waterfalls are easy to access (my huband hasa slight bit of difficulty in walking)which parks are worth a stop etc. HELP!

if one leaves Mel around 8am for Port Fairy along GOR will that be enough time? If not, then I really messed up because I've got reservations in Mel, then 2 nights in Port Fairy...can anyone advise me? Should I start changing my reservations or stick with what I have? It's the weekend after Easter that we're going. Thanks.

Try to change your reservations have one night at Apollo Bay (or Lorne.)then one in Port Fairy. Port Fairy is too far to drive in one day. Parts of this road are very slow driving. Enjoy

Last time we drove Melbourne to Port Fairy, we left about 8.30am, stopped at Geelong for short walk along pier. Stopped at Torquay for coffee and walk. Wandered along to Apollo Bay and stopped for lunch. Stopped again at the Twelve Apostles and walked to lookouts. Stopped at several places to enjoy the views. Got into Port Fairy about 5.30 pm. Other good places to stop at are Loch Ard and Mariners Lookout (near Apollo Bay).
Asking how much time you need to drive this route is like asking how long is a piece of string. There are so many places where you could stop and linger, so it just depends on how much time you have.

When we drove the Great Ocean Road, we stopped in Apollo Bay in a great self-catering apartment (Sea-farer's Retreat) overlooking the sea (with the most amazing sunrise ever!) and then in Gobel's Mill in Port Fairy, before heading into the Grampians and spending a night in an independent hostel at Halls Gap, before the final day 500km slog to Adelaide.

I wouldn't recommend that last day, but definitely would stop as many times as you can afford to! Check out my reports on www.travelpackers.com, username is sonandjim.

I highly suggest spending the night somewhere along the GOR. I have only traveled it once when visiting a friend in Melb. One morning we woke up and he said who wants to go to the GOR - I yelled I do I do!

Little did I know it would be an eight hour round trip of basically just driving.

I wish to God we would have stayed somewhere... Sad to say beautiful as it is being in a car on this road for that long made it more of a chore.
