How high will the dollar go?
I know that's like asking how long is a piece of string but I'm sure I read on a thread somewhere that one Fodorite thought the dollar would reach parity by New Year. Not sure if that might have been you Neil?
Anyway, as I hope to be there in March I am wondering if I should just buy a few hundred dollars at a time between now and then or should I just wait till the New Year? I would appreciate your thoughts. |
Whoops! Sorry, of course, I'm referring to the US Dollar.

"Sorry, of course, I'm referring to the US Dollar."
But in terms of your post title I think you mean the AUD, stormbird...? I might have reported some sentiment to that effect (parity with the USD some time early 2010 from memory) but being utterly unqualified I have no opinion myself. The weight of "expert opinion" suggests that the decline of the US$ (like the decline of the USA itself in relative terms) is an unstoppable long-term trend - gradual, or in the event that the Chinese get cold feet and start to liquidate their US$ holdings, a rout. All I've noticed is that every time the AU$ approaches the US$ and someone talks about parity being within reach, the trend reverses. Right now it's at about US$0.923. |
Thanks Neil, you're right about the trend reversing when the dollars get close.
I think I might buy some now and then see how it does go in the new year. On another matter Neil, I went away for a few weeks in September and when I came back to Fodors I noticed that someone we thought perhaps sniffed a bit of paint was gone - any ideas what happened? I feel like I missed something. |
Ah, stormbird, you've brought back old memories!
Well, not too put too fine a point on it, our mate got sacked by the Big Fodors Editor in the Sky. If you go back to his last few posts - I never know how to do that, myself - he finally went over the edge and used a racist term against a fellow poster. Whether he meant it in that light or was just, in his usual cack-handed way, trying to be funny, I don't know, but it was enough for him to be cast into the outer darkness. Naturally I deny having any hand in this whole sordid business. |
Hi Neil,
Well, I'm not surprised - he was a little unusual to say the least. And of course, it is understood that you had nothing whatsoever to do with the whole sordid business. And fyi, I think all his posts have been wiped off and are now in cyber space forever. Oh and the dollar has slipped 2cents as we speak! Doh! |
Hmmm. I was gone a good deal of September as well, and must have missed this. And since I have been back I have been planning another trip so hadn't been over here for awhile.
Sadly the next trip is not to Australia, so why I am doing things like looking at how the dollar compares, I do not know. Perhaps wishful thinking. |
stormbird, sorry to heist your post, but just wanted to re establish contact w/ neil. neil lost your email and not here enough to find your last mention of same. could you drop me a note at [email protected] so we can reconnect ( and you can tell me who has been a bit racist )
all is ok in victoria. the city has repaired all trace of your visit, but my prior association w/ you and robyn may be why my landed immigrant app is taking so long. i do have a bc drivers license and some of that practically free health care the right in the usa loves to bash. in vancouver for a week where it is sunny but coldish. will get my snowbird experience in guatemala for 3 weeks end of january. hope you and yours are well. cheers andrew ps even @ parity australia is awesome imho |
Andrew, read an understood, will drop you a line.
Perhaps the immigration department in Ottawa has got wind of our dubious associations. Our daughter for instance is currently working in a government department of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and that's not the worst of it. But on second thoughts I can't see that bothering notoriously liberal Canada. Sunny in Vancouver, eh? Count your blessings. |
