Hotels in Sydney

We will be visiting Sydney for four days in January- any good hotels reasonably priced that you know of? Less than $200.00 a night would be good if we can find something. We are boarding our cruise ship on January 28 so thought we should be near the Rocks or the harbor where the ships are. Thank you!

If you mean $200 USD/night, the Old Sydney Holiday Inn http://tinyurl.com/othfht in the Rocks is in a great location and within easy walking distance to the harbour and circular quay. With an AAA/CAA or senior discount, it is just about at that point. However, if you are willing to wait, you just might find it on www.wotif.com for less.

January is a peak time in Sydney, however for four days you should be able to get a reasonable deal. The Accor Novotel Hotel at Darling Harbour is nice, our daughter used to work there and we stayed a few times. The Marriott Hotel at The Rocks is also great. I put your dates into both web sites and they are a bit more than you want to spend, but it's worth asking what they can offer by way of a four night package.

It will probably be hot, unless we have a 'southerly change' in which case it can be quite cold for a day or two. So bring summer clothes and a jacket as well. I've seen thoroughly miserable tourists in shorts and tshirts who assumed quite rightly that it would be hot, only to encounter a 'southerly' and find that they are freezing cold.

I hope you love our beautiful city. Taronga Zoo is worth a visit - you can catch a ferry there from Circular Quay which is near The Rocks. We took our granddaughter there last Sunday to see the new baby elephant (so cute!) and the views have to be the best views of any zoo in the world.

Thank you so much for your suggestions- we can't wait to see your beautiful city. We may decide to do one of the Princess pre-cruise tours which include the Four Seasons Hotel or Sydney International, transportation to and from the airport and ship and hotel, a Blue Mountain day tour (tram) and a Sydney tour by bus. We would also like to include a harbor tour and just walk around and see the bridge, beaches, etc. We are so excited. My friend has read about Taronga Zoo and we will try and include that as well- so much to see in four days, but we'll do our best. Where is the best place to see Australian wildlife- Featherdale Wildlife Park or the zoo? Thanks a lot!

At Featherdale you can get up close to some of the wildlife - certainly more so than the Zoo.

Was there recently - great fun.

Taronga Zoo is spectacular, though!

We are heading to Sydney in 9 months, our travel agent booked us at The Menzies. It looks to be pretty centrally located and was in our price range. Have a great trip!! I cant wait for ours!

Another, well located, very reasonably priced and favoured by this ex Sydneysider's family in recent years is the Wynyard Travelodge, diagonally across the very compact Wynyard Park from the Menzies.

In June, I stayed at the Harbour Rocks Hotel and really enjoyed it. The staff was really helpful (it was my first time in Sydney) and within walking distance of many things to see and good restaurants. The location was perfect. On the first day I took the hop on-hop off bus to get acquainted with the city and there is a stop one block from the hotel.

Thanks so much for all your great advice. By going online ourselves we found good rates at the Intercontinental Sydney and then in Auckland at the Sky City Grande- so that part is done. Now on to the rest of the planning.
