Hotel inDarwin for the 5th August

I am finding some trouble to book 2 rooms for about 200$ per night in Darwin for the 5th of August.
Some of teh center hotels seem to be full or offering rooms at much higher rates.
Is it a difficult time?
Another question/comment that I have is that quality/price relation for hotels in Darwin seems to be high for customers.

Try www.wotif.com

Novotel Atrium is in an excellent location facing the water and has rooms for $215.

Don't know what's on then, it's not school holidays, but there do seem to be quite a lot of "sold" signs on the website for that week.

Dear Car

The dates you are trying for are the peak tourist season in Darwin - the Darwin Cup is held on August 4th - so chances of getting a room are almost zero.

Ah ha! Darwin Cup - wondered what was on. What fun, car .... you must go, it will be fabulous!

You can still get in at Cullen Bay Resorts ($192) or Botanic Gardens ($225) - just two on wotif right now.

Tks ,
It looks fun , but I will be arriving after the races but not before the crowds are gone.
So I will change my original plan of staying one night in Darwin and then going visiting Lichtfield, Kakadu and Katherine.
To traveling directly from the airport to somewhere near Lichtfield.
Doable? Any suggestions?
And then staying later in Darwin.
Hope there is no Kakadu croco cup those days.
Rgds
