Hotel Ideas for South Island?
We will visit the South Island soon and wanted hotel or B&B ideas for the following places: Christchurch, Queenstown, Te Anau and Dunedin. We would like to stay someplace comfortable with personality and within walking distance to the action (city center, restaurants, museums, views, etc.). Any info on how to contact these establishments would be very appreciated (i.e. e-mail address, etc.). Also, any recs on restaurants, pubs, cafes nearby would also be wonderful. Cheers!

Hi -<BR><BR>Here are my suggestions:<BR><BR>Dunedin - 1) Albatross Inn (B&B style Edwardian Guesthouse located within walking distance to downtown area. We stayed in Room #2 as shown on their website - it was incredibly quiet - lots of personality! albatrossinn.co.nz 2) Leviathan - located in a busy area of town - we didn't care much for our first room, but were given a much nicer, quieter room near the back of the hotel when we requested a room change - it has been a few years since we stayed here though - www.dunedinhotel.co.nz.<BR><BR>Christchurch - The Commodore Airport hotel - our hotel of choice when in the area - easy to locate when arriving jet lagged and driving on the left side of the road.<BR><BR>Queenstown - 1) Villa Del Lago - a condo-like complex located a 25 minute walk from downtown - by far our favorite place to stay as it's the quietest place we've found in Queenstown - I highly recommend it - www.villadellago.co.nz - 2) A-Line Hotel - located on Stanley Street - short walk to downtown, but a bit noisy as the hotel faces a busy street - very nice rooms though - www.scenic-circle.co.nz.<BR><BR>Te Anau - It's been a few years, but we stayed in the Village Inn - we were given a unique room with a spiral staircase leading to a second floor bedroom - www.thevillageinn.co.nz. <BR><BR>If you like Indian food, I highly recommend Little India in both Dunedin and Queenstown. Also, The Cow is a bit of a Queenstown institution and a fun place for lunch.<BR><BR>Have a great time!

Christchurch: The Grange House B&B at 56 Armagh Street. Located within walking distance of the CBD. Marie Simpson and son Paul are the proprietors. The Rydges Hotel is also good and also in the CBD. Look them up on Google. The Commodore is excellent but is isolated at the airport. <BR>Good eating places are Oxford on Avon and The Chancery on Lane. Both in the CBD. Visit the Tourist Info center at Cathedral Square for touring help.<BR><BR>Queenstown: The Rydges overlooking Lake Wakitipu and the Remarkables is a 5 minute walk to town. Take the dinner cruise on the TSS Earnslaw. The Cow on Cow Lane is a pizza joint with great italian food. Located right behind McDonalds.<BR>Dunedin: Albatross Inn is an excellent choice. Be sure to tour the Otago Peninsula and see the Albatross in their habitat.<BR>Can't help with Te Anau.<BR>Get ready for the trip of your life.<BR>John

We stayed at Rydges in Christchurch and it was great. I got good rates at "Rydges.com" site. In Queenstown we stayed at "Hurleys" in an apartment. It was one of the best places we stayed in on our trip. Quiet, clean, great beds, smaller motel with a beautiful view of the "Remarkables" mountains in the morning. Do take the TS earnshaw boat trip - you'll love it. Go to the top of the mountain on the ski lift - the sights are fantastic! Have a pint at "the Pig and thistle" with some really nice people.
