Hotel Choices:
Anyone know anything about the following hotels and which would you pick? Please decide based on central location, nice hotel, etc.
Queenstown, NZ: Millenium or Novotel Christchurch, NZ: Millenium or Ibis Sydney, AUS: Sheraton on the Park or Intercontinental In Melbourne- I booked the Adelphi.. is this good? Can anyone recommend hotels in Port Douglas/Cairns area? |
I'd go with the Novotel Gardens over the Millenium in Queenstown. It's very close to the lake, and right on the edge of the CBD. Haven't stayed there for years, not since it was first built by the THC, but I have stayed at the Millenium, and it was nice, but I wasn't overwhelmed (maybe just 'whelmed')
The Ibis in ChCH is conveniently located right in the town centre, but the rooms are small, and I didn't feel it was good value. They also didn't have car parking, although this may have been rectified by now. It was very new when we were there. Can't comment on the Aust hotels. |
Sheraton is in a lovely position and I think the rooms are better than those at the Intercontinental but I have not stayed either for sometime but doubt that they have altered very much .I prefer the bathrooms although I have had a nice bathrom at the Interc.George W. B stayed there last year so it may have all been upgraded for him and staff .
The Adelphi is a groovy boutique hotel , which I think has recently been refurbished , with a terrifically good restaurant underneath called Ezards and in Flinders Lane close to everything. Its roof pool has part bottom that is clear glass suspended out over the street so when you swim you can look at the pavement .A good choice I think . Sea Temple in Port D has had excellent reviews . |
Check out www.mandalay.com.au for Mandalay Shalimar in Port Douglas. You're right on the beach and a quick walk to the main drag in town (restaurants, bars, groceries) and the docks to catch many charter boats out to parts of the Reef.

Just read another review of The Adelphi from The Ausralian newspaper Weekend Magazine of about 3 weeks ago which says it has excelent toiletries and lovely room service food - organic served in tagines to keep it all warm etc .
