Hotel 59-Sydney (Kings Cross)

Has anyone ever stayed at Hotel 59 in the Kings Cross area? Any information appreciated.

Hi, 646wyck!

I guess you've already had a look at www.hotel59.com.au, so there's not much I can add to that about the hotel itself. I recall a few months ago someone asked about it on this forum, and I replied with a less-than-positive response which was mainly on the theme of "why would you want to stay way out there where you have to catch a train or bus to get to the city, and walk through King's Cross to get to just about anywhere?" A couple of people replied with very warm memories of the Hotel59: they didn't find the location a problem, and the host and hostess apparently treated them like royalty. I haven't stayed there, so I accept their evaluation... but be aware that it is not exactly IN Sydney (forty minutes' walk or a five minute train ride from King's Cross Station), and that King's Cross has a well-deserved reputation as the sleaze capital of Sydney (admittedly, the Hotel 59 isn't in the worst part).

Thanks,Alan for your information. We had read that the Kings Cross area isn't the greatest location. However,we received a very nice and lengthy reply from the Hotel. Guess they are looking for business. We really thought about the Travelodge on Wentworth,as we thought the location would be better. What do you think?

Frankly, I think I'd rather have the Cross! Wentworth Avenue is okay for ultra-budget accommodation, or of all you plan to do in Sydney is catch trains at Central Station (the Central YHA is quite close to Wentworth Avenue) but otherwise it's a deadly part of the city. Grim. The Cross may be sleazy, but at least there are always lots of people around, even if many of them are up to no good!

I've had guests who've stayed at Hotel 59 and they speak quite highly of it - particularly the friendliness of the owners. Position didn't seem to be a problem.

We stayed there a couple of years back - small clean place, we did not find the location a problem. A bus stop very close.

Very nice breakfast - my fav was the muesli with fruit and honey, mmmm. Hubby and friends always had the eggs - very good. Lots of good coffee.

They went out of their way to find a place for us to park the car we rented for a night. very accomodating when we changed our reservations.

only problem might be luggin your stuff upstairs, no elevators- Pack light:)
Ahh wish I were going to Sydney.
