hotel 59 -sydney
Has anyone ever stayed here? Any comments one way or the other? I know this is in Kings Cross, but other than a little out of the way is this a good hotel?
Thanks! |
No, mishoe01, I haven't stayed there -- and, frankly, I haven't heard of anyone who has. I checked it out for you on google, and thought that the building looked quaint and interesting. It seemed that this might be one of those undiscovered bargains!
Then I looked at the rates -- over $AUD100 for a double room. Somebody got the Boulevard, down the road but closer to Sydney, for around this price. You could get the Russell on wotif.com.au for around this price, on a quiet day. So, my feeling is, if you are getting a real bargain from this place -- maybe under $AUD70 per night -- go for it, and you might have an interesting experience. You will not enjoy having to use King's Cross Station every time you want to go into the city, but if you're a good walker and don't mind small hills, maybe you can avoid that. Other than that, the area it is in -- Bayswater Road -- is not TOO bad. The Jewish Museum isn't far, and Govinda's Restaurant is just a stroll. But if they are charging you a price comparable to what you could stay in Sydney in a GOOD location, then I wouldn't touch it. You will waste precious time every day trying to get away from King's Cross. Is it worth it? |
Hi Mishoe - I have a B&B Cairns and nearly all our guests come via Sydney. Many have stayed at hotel 59 and some were a little suprised at the location. Our last guest who stayed there, an attorney from San Francisco loved it and booked for 10 days - he particularly mentioned the friendliness and hospitality of the Greek owners. another popular one in the area is Victoria Court - 122 Victoria St, Potts Pt - www.VictoriaCourt.com.au

We stayed there back in Dec 2001 and liked it - cozy little place, clean, simply furnished. The guy who runs it was real nice. Breakfast there was nice - divine Muesli, I had it everyday :) We used to take a bus down to Circular quay. I love walking and takin public transportation whenever I can - so this was no biggie for me. |
Hi Mishoe,
Not familiar with that one, but Pat W. mentioned Victoria Court, which I have done a site inspection on, and it's very nice. Clean, neat, nice furnishings. Melodie Certified Aussie Specialist |
Stayed at Hotel 59 in July '02. The guy who runs the place is very helpful and the breakfast served at the downstairs cafe is great. It is one block from the bus stop (airport bus stops there, too). Easy to walk or take the bus downtown. After reading all of the negative stuff about King's Cross, we found that it was no big deal.

It looks like there is a nightclub (Sugareef) down the street - is this a very noisy area? I know what I've heard about the Kings Cross area, but wasn't sure if this street is that street is bad or not.
