Hobart Tasmania-Only one day
 

Need suggestions as to how to make the most of one day in Hobart on monday, December 27, 2004. We will not rent a car. Have been considering Bonorong, Richmond, Arctic experience or just walk around wharf area and Old Town area. Any thoughts appreciated.

jay, We spent a very pleasant morning roaming about battery,Point, Salamanca Place and the waterfront. We got a good deal from the Tourist Office at the Lenna ($124./night). Lovely accomodation , enourmous room, great for hanging out laundry and a view out to the harbour. The desk staff recommended a fabulous thai hole in the wall in N. Hobart, on a bus line.

While we were there we visited the Tourist office and they made arrangements for us to take the bus out to Port Arthur. We enjoyed it immensely. That and Salamanca and touring the city of Hobart made for a great stay.

Don't forget to have breakfast at one of the bakeries in Hobart - fantastic breakfasts!!

Have just had one day in Hobart last week myself. Had a really good day by simply wandering around the town. Had breakfast at a nice little place called Cafe Kara in town then meandered down towards Salamanca Place and slowly browsed our way around all the shops there. Chose a nice spot for lunch and then afterwards walked around Battery Point. The Artic Experience place shut a couple of years ago by the way. There may well be plenty of action around the waterfront as the Sydney-Hobart (major yacht race) will be on. It start on 26th December so in Sydney so on the 27th they won't have started arriving in Hobart but there will be lots of people getting ready for the celebrations when they do arrive. If you need overnight accommodation I think you better book now as the race is probably Hobart's biggest event of the year. Sorry if you are an Aussie and the above is obvious to you, but couldn't tell if you were from o/s or not.

I would suggest that you experience Port Arthur during the morning/early afternoon and then go back to Hobart, relax, and then toodle around town sightseeing and have a nice dinner. Port Arthur is such a special place and you shouldn't miss this experience.

Gee, only one day in Hobart, what a pity you don't have 2 days there, its such a lovely city, quiet yes, but scenic wise, its great. My recommendations would be similar to others on this board, Breakfast in a bakery cafe, then a visit to Salamanca Markets (saturdays), then a walk around Battery Point, with its restaurants, cafes, and old buildings & cottages. Then a trip up Mt.Wellington behind Hobart, perhaps a cruise around the Derwent River, then late afternoon a visit to the nearby wineries, to taste some world class wines. Evening, dinner in one of the beaut restaurants down on the waterfront.

If only given one dayu,
Would anyone recommendend a half day tour to Bonorong Wild Animal Park and Richmond Village? If this was done, would there still be time to stroll around Salamanca pl and wharf area?
