LOL- we meet again.
The Henry Jones -- that's where I'm staying. You can google reviews on it from several travel websites.

Have done that. Mixed reviews. Fodorguidebook loves it. Someone said location is not central. It sounds different and interesting, though

We are flying to Sydney, then to Cairns, then Ayers Rock, Adelaide, Tasmania, leave from Melbourne.

Have a tour from Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon to Alice Springs. Will be renting car in Tasmania.

Will be winging it the rest of the time, arranging tours when we are there.

Note abut airfare in Australia, travel agent's quote was $2700 pp for 5 flights. Quote from Qantas-$900/pp. The kicker was that $800 was not refundable, so there was no advantage to using travel agent. We booked flights on our own.$15 phone booking fee for all flights.

Not going until fall, so will have time to benefit from your exploits.
Love to know what you are doing.Am looking for interesting restaurants, like the Richmond Bakery. I live in a gourmet ghetto.
Take care.

Foxf1,
The Henry Jones keeps surfacing here and was the rec of our resident Tas expert, LizzyF. Strange that the feedback is so uneven. It is not central - at least to my way of thinking, but you will probably be able to walk to Salamanca Market and the shops and restaurants which are on the harbor. Organized tours depart from the tourist office a few blocks away. Battery Point may not be walkable from that location, nor the major museums, etc. in Hobart. Parking in Hobart is disagreeable - and mostly metered. I have never stayed on the harbor -we prefer a small British run hotel with free parking two blocks away, but it is a lovely area unless there is a cruise ship in! I'll look forward to your feedback.

Of course one would have to ask " central to what"?
Everything is central in Hobart and the HJAH is only about 1/3 mile walk to the Salamanca markets - 250 yards to the fish restaurants on the wharf - a bit further to the better one which is Fish Frenzy.
One block from the bus. I don't like the decor at the hotel because it is not my style but if you like modern art then it is probably for you - however it seems out of place in Hobart. I would prefer an apartment hotel either on Elizabeth Pier or at Salamanca place either of those places would be nice.

This is a map that should show exactly what LizzyF is talking about.

Thank you all. We walk whenever possible. I think the hotel provides free parking. Lizzy-your restaurants sound great.

I enjoyed HJAH but we were upgraded to a lovely suite with a small walled outdor terrace .The room amenities and toiletries were good .I think the food , especially the breakfasts , was very good . I also agree with Liz that there are some very smart apartments to also consider .The docks / Salamanca / Battery Point and city centre are all close and an easy walk .
