Has anyone REALLY seen a Platypus (in the wild)?
 

I am going to the Eungella Nat Forest for a couple of nights - my boyfriend is VERY keen to see a Platypus! I told him not to be disapointed if none appeared for him! But, I am wondering how often they actually are spotted (in the wild)? Do people really see them swimming around? Eungella IS supposedly the best viewing area...who knows!?

Saw one near Russell falls in Tasmania.

saw one near daintree's silky oak lodge (i think) and then another about 2 hours inland from cairns on a bridge near the banyan tree (forget the town). there was even a sign indicating that it was a platy bredding area- know where i did NOT see one?? in the sydney zoo in the platypus cage!

Absolutely! They are all around the streams in the hinterland behind the Gold Coast, particularly around Tamborine Mountain. There is a winery up here which has a stream at the back of the property and they are in there and can be seen most days.

I've seen them regularly on Atherton Tableland - where there's a public viewing area and also in creeks and rivers on rural retreats and farmstays - early morning or evening. Our other monotreme is the echidna - have also seen them in wild near Ravenshoe on Tableland - cute - like a little waddling hedgehog.

We saw several in Eungella National Park. There is a public viewing area at Broken River, near the Eungella Summit. Get there at dusk, and you are pretty much assured of spying your quarry!

Went on Uncle Brian's tour out of Cairns. GREAT FUN plus at the end of the day we camped out by a creek in the Atherton Tablelands and were very, very quiet and saw a few.

Then had bikkies and tea. Yum.

Yes, we saw one swimming in Pencil Pine Creek Tasmania just by the entrance information area of Cradle Mountain Park.

We saw a platypus at Finch Hatton Gorge near Eungella. Apart from seeing platypuses, Eungella is really lovely and worth visiting. Ask around when you get there and the locals will tell you the best spots to go to. I understand early morning and late afternoon are the best times.

Eungella is probably one of the best places for seeing platypus. Go to the viewing platform at Broken River near the bridge at dawn or dusk and be very still. For others, Eungella is a little off the beaten track being inland from Mackay. Up Cairns way the bridge at Yungaburra or the creek at Kingfisher Park, Julatten are good bets. Same thing, dawn or dusk and be very still.
