I was in Delhi 3 years ago, if its still there you might try the hotel vivek on the main street in the paragange (probably spelt wrong) district - its clean, inexpensive and you'll find a fair amount of westerners stay there. Theres a good view from the rooftop resturant of the area and the train station is just down the road. Also near is Delhi's Red Fort and a number of parks and airline offices. One word of warning - don't order any meat in the resturant - I regretted it. You'll need a taxi if your coming from the airport (IGIA). Have a good one.

The best hotels in Delhi are the Oberoi,The Taj MAhal, The Taj Palace, the Hyatt, the Maurya Sheraton , Holiday Inn. all these would be in the category of USD 100-200 per day. However, the Ashoka, the Claridges are probably much lower but very good. All these are in prime locations, clean and safe.

We spent 10 days during February at the Imperial on Janpath in Delhi. Not cheap but a fine hotel. Even if you don't stay there, go for lunch on the patio and spend a few hours.

I stayed at the Imperial for a few days last May. It is very, very nice. Wonderful pool and restaurant. It is not centrally located to the places we wanted to go, requiring a taxi ride. The taxis at the Imperial are the most expensive kind--the old Mercedes type. If you go out to the road, you can get cheaper transport. Also, if you go through an Indian travel agent you can get a much cheaper room at the Imperial. The published rates are out of date, as they have a brand new wing that they are using now, and the rates are much higher than those in the older now-unused wing. After a couple of days in luxury, we downsized to the Ajanta. It takes a special kind of traveler to like the Ajanta; but the price was right, about $25/day for a double and the location was great.
