It's MelboUrne to you Madam/Sir!
Anyway, if you desire to stay in the city center, the location does not matter that much. All the following fine hotels are within walking distance of any CBD and Yarra River attraction. There is a great network of trams running through the CBD area, and the one that runs around it is actually free.
Here is the list:
Sheraton Towers Southgate
Duxton
Westin
Grand Hyatt
Melbourne Marriott
Savoy Park Plaza
Crown Towers
I stayed at the Hilton on the Park and it was a very nice stay, although it is outside of the Central Business District.
Do a www.google.com search for their websites.

I think Crown Casino would have the best rooms in Melbourne, they have some truly spectacular and very expensive suites on the top floors - the type of place someone very famous and very rich would stay. They have lots of different room types and some have wonderful city views, particularly at night. Crown is just at the edge of the city, about 5 min walk and it's on the Yarra River so a nice area for walking, usually busy with people eating out etc. They have a cheaper sister hotel next door called the Promenade, so make sure you know which one you are booking.
Another suggestion is the Westin which is fairly new and right in the middle of town, surrounded by shops and restaurants etc. Have not seen their rooms.
The Park Hyatt is nice but to my mind not in a great location, at one end of town where there's not much happening.
Also Sheraton Southgate which I think has been renamed - someone else may know the new name. Good rooms and good views but slightly cheaper than Crown. It's also on the Yarra and in a good location.

I entirely agree with AA Frequent Flyer. But, do have a look at the Magnolia-Court Hotel situated a few minutes out of the Central Business District in East Melbourne. Location is near Fitzroy Gardens, walk through to the free circular city tram and Parliament station, along with Captain's Cook cottage, and a delightful licensed cafe/kiosk for lunch at the Fitzroy Gardens. See their web site (which also has a generous seniors special discount) for prices/location. Think you will be delighted with an individual style hotel rather than the normal chain-type enjoyable hotels. Enjoy your stay in Melbourne. Suggest you book for the Melbourne Tram evening meal which tours the city while you dine, a truly memorable evening (two sittings per night). Happy touring-Phyljay

ps... Re Hilton Hotel, East Melbourne. This hotel has a delightful luncheon smorgesborg, especially Sunday. Do book ahead though, particularly on a Saturday due to Australian Rules Football matches. (Still prefer the cafe in the Fitzroy Gardens) but both lunches are well worthy of an enjoyable meal, both for the food and the ambience of each location. Cheers from Melbourne...p-jay

I saw a lovely small hotel The Lyall Hotel and found a good rate, but it is in South Yarra which seems kind of out of the way. I really appreciate everyones comments and suggestions. We will be there 5 nights, and don't we want to be more centrally located. Thanks again.

Does anybody haveany info. on the Park Hyatt. I noticed that the Grand Hyatt was recommended. We are a family of 4 and currently have the Park Hyatt booked but we have to take 2 rooms. Any of the other hotels sleep 4 in a room.
Thanks Karen
