Going to Sydney for a month in February - best area to stay?
 

We're going to Sydney for a month in February and are looking at renting somewhere to stay. Just wanting some advice on which are the nicest areas in Sydney to live? We're looking for the ultimate place to stay in terms of quality of living, must be safe, smart etc but we'll obviously be doing alot of sight seeing so must be near to things.

A serviced apartment in the city would be one possibility.

Another area to consider is Darlinghurst; there are often flats for short term let in the Republic building, I have a friend who stays there for a month per year. Darlinghurst is very close to the city, it's a slightly edgy inner city area close to restaurants, pubs and public transport.

In terms of inner city suburbs, there are a range that have character as neighbourhoods. You could try the inner west: Balmain, Glebe, Newtown or the inner east: Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington, East Sydney, Potts Point.

If you want a more upmarket option the lower north shore may be more to your taste: Mosman, Neutral Bay, Cremorne. There's also the beach-side suburbs to consider, ideal if you are coming in February which can be very humid and hot: Bondi, Coogee, Clovelly, Bronte.

Is being on/near the water important? near a beach? access to public transportation? what's your price range? how many people are you?

Hez - There will be 2 people. Like i said, we will be wanting to get around the city easily so access to good transportation is a must. On a side note, which is the most used transportation in Sydney to get around? Being near the water/beach would be nice because we're only there for a month and want as idyllic a place as possible to stay.

I forgot to say, price isn't too much of an issue, we just want somewhere great to stay.

Sydney has trains, buses, ferries and light rail. If it were me, I would stay in an apartment at Star City Casino. It's in an awesome location in Pyrmont which is really close (10 minute walk) to Darling Harbour and the pedestrian bridge into the city. There's also light rail that literally stops inside the building and will take you to China town and Central Station. And, there's a ferry stop nearby that will take you to Balmain, Milson's Point (other side of the harbor bridge) and Circular Quay (the main ferry terminal, right near the opera house etc.).

Pyrmont also has shops, grocery (one right across the street), restaurants, lovely waterfront parks, etc as well as the Sydney Fish Markets which are the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The casino itself has loads of restaurants -- including a surprisingly great noodle bar.

I would suggest Quay West or Grand Quay, both are near Circular Quay which is convenient for trains and ferries.

I would think a 1 bedroom would be around 2500 to 3000 per week for a harbour view

You can get an apartment at Quay West with a harbour view for $1100 AUD per week.
