Getting around Sydney & Doyles

We are scheduled to stay at the Four Points Sheraton in Darling Harbour. Is the Four Points too far away from everything? We would like to go to Doyles on the Beach in Watson Bay. What is the best way to get there? How about the commuter ferry or the Biondi Explorer? Thanks!

Darling Harbour is not too far from everything it is just a bit of a pain getting around to Circular Quay every time you want to do something - but not that much of a pain.
You can get to Doyles at Watson's Bay on the Bondi Explorer but you can also do it yourself by getting a ferry from Circular Quay ( they have cut out a lot of the trips) having lunch there, taking a walk along the cliffs opposite and looking over "lovers leap" and then getting one of the buses, which will be standing at the bus stop, to Bondi Junction and from there back to town OR get a train from Bondi into town OR perhaps you may like to wander around the antique and coffee shops in Woolahra (spelling ??? - and I used to live there!!! ) en route or take a bus back to Double Bay and walk around the harbour side shops there - all this for about $2
OR you could try and plan a Ferry ride around the Harbour and get off at Watson's Bay.
I prefer eating at the outdoor Doyles b-b-que myself right on the waterfront and may I say that if your preference is steak, they do a very nice one.

Get youself a sydney transport pass when u arrive.
Catch the ferry darling harbour circular quay
Get the rose bay watsons bay ferry from the quay.
Walk around south head.
Have a drink at the watsons bay hotel
eat ur meal at doyles as the sun sets over the harbour bridge.
get the ferry back with the pretty city lights.

There is talk of a manly-watsons bay ferry loop..will be good for tourists when it happens.

John, Your idea sounds great. Any info on where or how you catch the ferries? How late do they run? The Manly-Watsons Bay ferry would also be ideal.

Thanks!

Try www.sydneybuses.nsw.gov.au
I find this a difficult site to use as it attempts to integrate bus and ferry travel.
check out the sydney ferry routes map.the timetables for relevant ferries and sydney pass details.
it is also possible to get water taxis on sydney harbour.

Hi John,
I agree with you on the sydneybuses website - they've recently 'upgraded' it & its even worse to use than it used to be! I found it impossible to just simply enter a bus route number & get a full timetable which is ridiculous - I couldn't help myself so I had to email them to let them know how unimpressed i was!! :-)
We loved the 4 points Sheraton on Darling Harbor. We went to Doyle`s by bus one way and came back via ferry. The fish was so fresh even the skin fell apart. We didn`t find it problematic to get around. You will be practically next door to the Aquarium and the Maritime museum at your hotel. Try to get a room with a view. You will have a wonderful time!

By the way, Russell Crowe used to be a waiter at Doyle`s.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I certainly agree with you about the government website. I found it very confusing. We are only able to stay in Sydney for 1 1/2 days. Would it be worth it to move to a hotel close to Circular Quay since we don't have much time? Is the location of Park Hyatt or Holiday Inn worth the extra $$?

Thanks again!

pat

interesting bit of trivia re: russell crowe. love his movies and so on - where did you hear about his serving days at doyle's?

;)

Heard that when they did a Russell Crowe biography on TV. I think it was on A&E.

Debbie
I think you should stay at the sheraton.
It is only a 100 yards or so from a ferry wharf which will take you round to the quay. Its a pleasant trip under the bridge.Your concierge will help with directions and timetable.
You are only 200 yards up the hill to the shopping precinct and trains.

A day and a half is pushing it..ignore ur jet lag and keep going.I hope you are not coming in off an overnight flight.
For the life of me i cannot find the time of the last ferry out of watsons bay..that site is terrible.
Doyles is touristy but great on a nice day.

Debbie Aug 12th, 2002 05:27 AM

Yes we are coming in after overnight flight. Hopefully we will have been able to sleep some.

Thanks for your help.
