Getting around Australia
Is it cheaper to fly from point to point rather than taking the rail? Say from Sydney to GBR? Thanks
|
I'm not sure about the rail proces - but there are some very cheap domestic flights around at the moment. Have a look at the Qantas and Virgin Blue web sites. The plane of course will be far quicker!

It's cheaper and faster to fly. We looked into the trains and found the comfortable ones to be expensive & take a really long time. As is...it takes 3+ hours to fly from Sydney to GBR. The trains are supposedly not as good as the rail system in Europe.

Try VirginBlue.com or Qantas.com

Have Fun!

Amy

Whilst some of the trains are indeed up to or better than European trains ( with the exception of the TVG) the distances are long and you absolutely have to have sleepers. If you are keen on doing part trips on trains then the trip from Sydney to Brisbane is nice as is the trip from Sydney to Murwillumbah and transferring to a bus into the Gold Coast. Brisbane to Cairns is only for die hard train lovers or those on the Orient Express ( special train) up there.

we are flying from sydney to ayers rock. Then from alice springs to Brisbane and the from Brisbaine to Cairns and finally from Cairns to Sydney> This is a total of 4850 miles in total. It is costing us each 600 US dollars. I think this is very cheap for those four flights. Each is one way also. Those comparible flights in the us would be much higher.

marshall531: Where did you find such cheap flight?? We too are planning a similar itinerary and have not been able to find such great deals!!
Thanks for all your help

If you check Qantas or Virgin you will be able to get very cheap flights if pre-booked and would certainly come out as cheap as the $600US
Also check out the boomerang pass, which can only be purchased in conjunction with an international ticket, and prior to getting to Australia. It works on the "coupon" system and zones, so you'd figure out where you wanted to go and then buy an appropriate coupon for the flight (ie sydney-ayers is a coupon for zone 1 to zone 2, ayers to brisbane is a coupon from zone 2 to zone 1, etc). This can often be cheaper than buying individual flights, and usually they're pretty flexible after booked for date changes.
