Fox Glacier Access Road Closure
 

Arroved in Franz Josef yesterday and was informed that the road from Fox Glacier township to the glacier has been closed for about a month due to storms. They are working on it but didn’t give a reopening date. This means that, until the road is reopened, you won’t be able to see Fox Glacier unless you do a heli-hike, etc.

This was probably part of the damage reported on February 1 by Diamantina in her “Wild Summer Weather in NZ” post.

Ditto, thanks much, Larry, for posting this useful information for those soon traveling to NZ's West Coast glaciers. Sorry you were not able to drive there.
No new storms are expected, but there will surely be more rain, perhaps making repair of this access road more difficult. Higher temperatures and rainfall are expected through May: https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/...ll-be-warm-wet
