Does anyone know of an airline which travels out of Toronto Ont or Buffalo NY to Australia, and which allows a free stopover in Hawaii on the way back without charging exorbitantly for the privilege?

Can't help you with exit cities but Qantas does fly out of NY and together with AA will fly via Honolulu on a code share arrangement. I don't think it costs anything to have a stop over actually.

I just checked on Expedia.

RT from Toronto to Sydney 8/4 to 8/18 (sample dates) is $1806.

RT from Toronto to Sydney with a stop in HNL is $1717.
