Which summer are you coming to NZ in? Northern or Southern Hemisphere summer?

If it is Northern, I would recommend heading to the South Island, particularly around Christchurch and Queenstown if you like to party and want to see the sights. Both can be combined pretty easily. Good skiing in and around Queenstown from July through September as well.

I guess you're referring to the northern hemisphere summer?

My advice: race off to a bookstore and buy a copy of the Lonely Planet guide to NZ. That will give you more than enough info. NZ is an excellent destination for younger travellers.

You could also check out the Hostelling International website (HIhostels.com).
