First-Time Trip to Australia – Must-See Places and Travel Tips?
 

Hi everyone, I’m planning my first trip to Australia and would love some advice on must-visit destinations. I have about three weeks and want to see a mix of cities, beaches, and nature. So far, I’m considering Sydney, Melbourne, and the Great Barrier Reef, but I’m open to other recommendations! Also, any tips on the best time to visit, transport options, or things to avoid as a first-time traveler?

When are you planning to come?

Sydney and Melbourne will be OK weather-wise year round. Colder in our winter of course. The Great Barrier Reef is a long way north, you'd need to fly that sector, fly Melbourne to Sydney too. The far north has the wet and dry, not the usual 4 seasons. Try to avoid November to March, when there are usually floods, cyclone etc. Trips to the reef would be impacted by wet weather.

We spent 3 weeks in Australia in October 2024. Here is a link to my TR in case you are interested. We did not go to the Barrier Reef but we did visit Melbourne and Sydney. We also saw the Penguin Parade on Phillips Island, near Melbourne, and spent 3 nights on the Great Ocean Road and 2 nights in Bendigo, one of the gold rush towns. And we spent 2 nights in the Blue Mountains, which are about 1.5 hours from Sydney.

There is no such thing as a set of "one size fits all" Must Do's. What would enthrall me may bore you to sobs. And vice versa.
A common first timer's trip of 2-3 weeks often includes what we call "Bridge, Reef, Rock" Sydney (Harbour Bridge) Cairns/Port Douglas (Great Barrier Reef) and Yulara (Uluru).

Suggest you take a look at some readily available online info, decide what you would like to see & do in your 3 weeks - and if those things are located in places where the weather or other conditions will be suitable while you're here.

I like your initial idea of places to visit and would suggest trying to add Uluru if you if you have any interest in visiting there.

As asked by Bokhara, WHEN is all important.

For instance, had you wanted to go to the Reef this month, monster rains have washed away roads and caused considerable damage, It is the wet season, however.

Are there any recommendations for exotic places in Australia that few people know about?

tip: Jetstar Airways is unreliable, so don't schedule anything (flight, cruise, tour, surgery) at your destination on the day of arrival that you can't miss.
Melbourne to Uluru/Ayre's Rock (AYQ) was on time but the return flight was delayed 4 hours.
I would fly them again, though. They had the only nonstop flight, and it was a great deal.
