Well, Muck
Why did you think the police were waiting at your hotel?:o

You're singing more than Sinatra, now ;)

Hi Tayls,
Bayview on the Park is quite removed from the City & St Kilda so you will need to master the tram systems or cabs. I suggest you take a cab into St Kilda just to sus out where everything is. I remember some years ago hidden behind I am thinking the Bayview is an older Hotel which did offer quite good pub meals but times change ! I have to tell you that very very really I have caught a tram. A couple of years ago had allsorts of bother with the ticket machine.
Only last month we stayed in Fitzroy St, St Kilda which has a lot of cafe's & after walking all day decided to catch a tram back from end of Acland Street... well I just ashumed these machines would take notes...but no.. it only took coins of which I had none... so hubby & I road the tram illegally for 2 stops then hoped off...thank goddness there wasn't a ticket inspector on board.
If you are around on a Sunday St Kilda foreshore market is worth a look at. Also a lovely massage is available at the St Kilda Baths. right on the water front. (Hepbern Spa St Kilda is the name.)
Enjoy

Hi all,

Thanks for the tip AussieJo. We'll definitely be cabbing it to the hotel when we arrive but after that, it'll be the trams, I'm afraid. Never mind. I'll try and master it even if it kills me! I was thinking of getting their metcards since we'll be there for a few days - then I don't have to bother with loose change. Unfortunately, I doubt if I'll find the time to relax in a spa - so much to do and see in just 4.5 days.

Ooooh....shop till I drop in Richmond, Marg? Sounds great...if I can drag the kids to another round of shopping! Heard Cheltenham DFO is good too. Maybe cab it there?

Mucky -- this is way off-topic, but while I think of it: I recall you lending support to one of your compatriots on another forum in the matter of some Americans referring to the UK, Wales included, as "England". The sad news I have is that the problem is more widespread, as indicated by this extract from a recent email from one of my two daughters, both working in somewhat remote Liaoning Province in northern China:

"At the bar the other night one of the performers dragged Andrew, Bron and I on stage with him. Andrew got quite frustrated because he insisted on telling the crowd all about the "two Australians and the English person", no matter how many times Andrew corrected him, 'wo shi We'ershiren!' ('I'm Welsh!')."

Sorry about that, mate.

Well Neil,

I rest my case

Margo and Marg,
I will try not to let fame go to my head.

Tavsi - re retail therapy. If you are shopping mainly for clothes, Bridge Road in Richmond would be better. DFO in Cheltenham is quite a way out of the CBD. There is another factory outlet mall (Brandsmart) in Whitehorse Road, Nunawading - again about 25 km from the CBD. Both DFO and Brandsmart sell clothing, china, manchester etc.

Hi again tayls..back to Sydney.Last night in town somebody passed me an advertisement that I thought I would pass on to you.It is for a bistro in the Shark hotel(!)in the SharkBites Bistro. It is for $5 (I think about $3.50 US)meals such as sausages and potato in port wine gravy, pesto chicken breast, crumbed fillet of fish, pasta of the day etc.Don't know what it would be like but you can't beat the cost!If you are interested it is on cnr of Liverpool and Pitt Streets (ph.9266 0284)..not far from where I think you said your sister will be staying. All the best!

Hi again,

Thanks so much PeterAlan. Will definitely check out SharkBites - if anything, it'll add colour to our holiday tales when we tell the folks back home where we had dinner!

Marg, I'm looking at more of a place/center which houses everything from clothes, shoes (yes!) and handbags to linen & other household stuff ... not forgetting toys as well! It'll be easier to cater to everyone's preferences. So I'm trying to persuade my sis to agree to renting one of those mini vans/multipurpose vehicles for a day. Then we can drive down mornington peninsula for a day out, with sightseeing and shopping thrown in. Cheltenham is on the way dwon (I checked their website!). Where is Nunawading? I checked eurodelta's website and they gave a quote of around AUD$130, incl. tax and insurance, for a Toyota Tarrago 8-seater. Divide that by two families and we're quite okay!

Hi tayls, Nunawading is in the wrong direction for you as you are staying near St.Kilda. Stick to your idea & hire a van & go to Cheltenham for retail then down south along the coast.
Don't forget if you are travelling by plane you may become over weight. If you are travelling Jetstar anything over 20kg. will cost $5. per kilo.
Virgin also do a charge... although I have been over a few times & got away with it.
Enjoy

Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to each and everyone of you. Really, really appreciate all your help.

Well, we'll be off to Oz tomorrow. Can't wait!

Take Care, all of you.

Love & hugs,
Tayls
