Dunedin city walking self-tour vs. touring Albatross Colony, Penguin Place, Larnach Castle and Denedin highlights
Hi,
My cousin is taking a cruise to both Australia and NZ. One of the stops is in Dunedin. He is debating whether to merely do a self-guided walking tour in Dunedin versus taking an excursion that goes to Albatross Colony, Penguin Place, Larnach Castle and covers some of the City Sights. Any comments/personal experiences to help him decide which option to do would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would not miss an opportunity to see the penguins and albatross.
Although I really enjoyed Dunedin , my main reason for travelling there was to see the wildlife.
It's a nice place, but I think I would have been disappointed if I'd only seen the city.

Do the excursion IMO. The Albatross Colony is fascinating, and Penguin Place provides a unique view of some very private penguins. I have not seen Larnach Castle. If you walk around Dunedin, be prepared to do some climbing, owing to the many steep hills in the city.

I'd probably give Lanarch "Castle" a miss, if you have that option. Some of the other posters have recommended the ELM wildlife tour, but if the excursion is your only other option, I'd do that over the walking tour of Dunedin. The wildlife sites are outside of town.
