Diving with a toddler

Hi,

I'm going to Port Douglas with my husband and 2y old daugther. I'd like to do one of those trips to dive (never did before) but I don't want to go alone on a whole day trip. Do you know of a half day trip?? Or a trip where my husband and daugther could come along and do something else??
Thanks

Don't think you'll find a half-day trip but could be wrong. However, if you are talking about what is sometimes called a "resort dive" (ie no previous training required) most of the big operators will have that on offer. Your hubbie and toddler go along for the ride. When you've done the diving thing hubbie can go snorkel.

Cheers.

http://www.thetourspecialists.com/tours-reef.html covers most of the reef trip options in Cairns region, there being more starting from Cairns than PD, though some like Quicksilver do a PD pick-up, and then call in there on the way back and so your time away would be less, though still more than a half day.

If it is a dive you want to do rather than snorkel and Quicksilver like others will offer a solo dive, introductory for beginners, but it will take a couple of hours for about 30 mins. in the water, there being out of water instructions and preparation etc. but whether doing that and a quick snorkel too or just snorkelling alone, one option with a little more expense but a great experiemce would be to book a helicopter return which could have you leaving the platform shortly after lunch if you book it ahead to make sure of being on the first return.

There are also possibly some of the others that do helicopter return options, and for any up to date local advice have a chat online with www.ragingthunder.com.au

Can't think of a half day reef trip which will give time for an introductory dive - but have a look at sailing Quicksilver's Wavedancer to Low Isles. Not the outer reef, but beach and shallow waters for toddler, snorkelling and diving available. Leaves PD at 10.00am.

Can understand your reluctance to take 2yo for full day on outer reef, at that age they need a beach area to run about and an outer reef trip is usually just too long a day for them.

From Cairns, Green Island is a great place for small kids, Big Cat will take you there and back and organise an intro dive off the island on nearby reef, but to include a dive you would need more time than their half day trip allows. Their 9.00am full day departure gives 5 hours at Green Island and 11.00am departure gives 4 hours.
