Distances in Tasmania
We are planning a trip to Tasmania in March. I'm thinking we'll fly into Hobart and out of Launceston. What's the driving time between Freycinet and Hobart versus Freycinet and Launceston? We think we'll have 5 days - perhaps 2 in Hobart, 1 in Port Arthur and 2 in Freycinet. My idea was to then drive to Launceston, but maybe we should go back to Hobart instead? With the timing of the trip, I think we'd have Friday and Saturday nights in Hobart - sounded like a good idea to start out there.
In another post, I did ask for advice on places other than the lodge in Freycinet. I know it sounds wonderful, but it really is more than I want to spend, so if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! |

Hi Susan,
I just asked my husband who is a native Tasmanian and he said Freycinet/Hobart is about 3 hrs and Freycinet/Launceston is about 2 hrs. One thing we noticed while in Tassie last Christmas was the lack of traffic, it made driving very easy. Cabins in caravan parks are a popular and cheap alternative to hotels. Try www.big4.com.au there is a park at Coles Bay, also Bicheno. There are other caravan park chains as well, I think one is Top Tourist. Might be worth looking at, lots of the parks these days have cabins with ensuite facilities, TV etc. Kay |
Thanks for the replies.

KayF, big4 has a link to a place called Iluka Holiday Centre. Are you familiar with it? There are self-contained units and cabins. From the description, the units seem to have balconies and overlook the beach, whereas the cabins don't. Cabins are less expensive, but the units sound ok and price is right. Thanks.

Hi Susan,
Sorry, I've never stayed at the Iluka Holiday Centre but usually the cabins and units in caravan parks are good value for money. I would avoid any that are actual caravans as they would most likely be quite old but a unit with a balcony and your own bathroom sounds nice. I'm sure if you emailed the owners/managers they would be happy to answer any questions. Kay |
In regard to cabins.
We used Big4 on-site cabins between Cairns and Canberra last year and every cabin was clean and neat and very reasonably priced by comparison with motels -and they give you more space. We found them to be excellent value. |
Thanks for the replies. I'll definitely follow up on Iluka.

Susan, just a thought - check with the caravan park that linen is provided or can be hired. (Linen is bedding, pillows and towels.) We have on occasion stayed in a cabin where you had to bring your own, so best to find out now.
