Distance in Car
Hi, I would like to know how much time, well hours, it takes to drive from Perth to Darwin? Thanks,

Koala

It is 1700 km. I'm reading a 3 year old letter from a friends who did this. They said they drove this in 6 days, but they stopped along the way. They drove up along the coast from Perth, then had to cut inland. Apparently it was a rough, sparse drive after that to Darwin. They had no complaints about doing it however.
I've lost touch with them or I'd get more info for you. Sorry!

Days is the right answer particularly if you want to sightsee along the way. If you intend to drive straight through you could do it in three days but in that case, it would be much better to fly from Perth to Darwin.
If you drive, there are long stretches with nothing to see. You will find roadhouses about every 300 km to fill up the car, stay overnight, eat etc. Places to see along the way include Broome, Monkey Mia, the Pinnacles National Park, wild flowers at Kalbarri NP, Geikie Gorge at Fitzroy Crossing, the Kimberleys, Katherine Gorge etc etc. It's a very isolated part of the world but we have never regretted driving that route.

G'day Koala.
It's actually 4200km!! ( Sorry Icuy )
While that could be done in 6 days you would certainly not see anything and would be better off taking a flight.
I usually allow about 3 weeks for this trip, driving along the Gibb River Road in a 4WD with side trips to all the attractions along the way.

Your travel dates are very important as during the WET ( Monsoon ) many creek crossings can be under water and some even impassable to 4WD vehicles.
Never drive on those roads after sunset and even during the first hour after day break.
Stock and wildlife will then come out of nowhere and even a small Kangaroo can stop you in your tracks, while Cattle or feral Donkey's will easily wipe out your car.
Take it easy and take care out there,
Mike.

I agree with Mike about the wild life on the roads. Also watch out for eagles who sit on the carcasses feeding and won't move until the vehicle is almost on them. They move very slowly and low to the ground - it would be most painful to have an eagle sitting on your lap in the car.

whoa! thanks mike...koala would have been really disappointed if he got started on the 1700 km trip with no end! I re read my letter and I guess that was one stretch they drove, not the whole distance. Mea culpa! I guess it was 6 driving days with a stop along the way.
