bist:
We were in Sydney for a week and took a day tour via motor coach to Canberra. Canberra is well worth the visit. We toured the Parliament chambers, the War Memorial and many other Governmental points of interest. The embassy homes were spectacular. Each outdoing the other in landscape beauty, architecture and decor.
We also toured the Blue Mountains. But my preference has to be Canberra.
John

Please go to Canberra! It was one of our favorite places to see! The war memorial was the best I have ever seen.
The parliament building...amazing. The museums....wonderful. IF I had known I would have done a good 2 day trip but we did the 1 day bus tour. Not the best way to see it...but we didn't have to drive, had a very nice bus driver and got the highlights. Would have hate that we had not gone. NEXT time we go back...I am spending several days.
AND don't go on Friday..Parliament is NOT in session those days. I would love to see them in there debating!

Check the schedule to see if they are out for the summer etc....

Canberra sights are OK for day trip- as said, but with only 5.5 days in Sydney less 1 for Blue Mts, I would not lose one of them in Canberra. Sydney has enough to do without hours in the car or expensive plane journeys. Canberra ultimately is just one suburban town with some impressive buildings and interesting if you want to check out town planning exercises. Enjoy Sydney instead- its a proper city wiht lots to do, Check out Catalina Rose Bay in Rose Bay, as a great restaurant on the water about 15 minutes from the centre.

I strongly agree with Nick that Canberra is fine, but Sydney is divine.

But if in the future you spend a lot more time in Sydney, and in a fit of temporary insanity are looking for a change of pace... just impulsively hop on one of the daytrip buses leaving Sydney Casino each morning.

It's fast - there's only one stoplight on the new express route! The bus stops half way at a quaint rural rest stop. Most importantly they herd you (a bit too quickly) thru all the highlights which you will never find yourself due to Canberra having the most absurdly disorientingly layout of any small town.

Hi, bist_m!
The last two posters are absolutely right.
Canberra is a great place to visit, and I always recommend that people do this instead of some of the other more "popular" trips, but you really do need more than a day to do it justice. Even flying, with airports being what they are, you will use up half your day getting there or getting back, and the best you could hope for would be a quick glance at the features... it's a bit like suggesting a day tour to Washington! If you can't spend a couple of days there, and your time in Sydney is so limited, then concentrate on seeing Sydney properly, and leave Canberra for a future occasion (and Sydney is so great that there is bound to be one!)

Save Canberra for " if it rains". Don't drive yourself - take a one day bus tour . Get on the bus with a couple bottles of wine . The war museum and Art Gallery are the two best museums I have ever seen .

Guaranteed you will have a great trip.

But , if it as a beautiful sunny day , sights around Sydney couldn't be better.

P
