Darwin, hotter than Cairns, or similar?
 

We'd thinking of adding Darwin to the itinerary. We'll fly from Cairns to Perth, mid-January, so why not stop somewhere in between? We gave a little thought to Ayers Rock until everyone said--way, way too hot for walking about in mid-January.

I've been reading about Darwin, the city, and it sounds delightful. If it's going to be no hotter than Cairns, then why not for 4-5 days? Even if the weather is too rainy for day trips to the surrounding great parks, the city itself seems to have a lot to offer. Anyone have anything to add, one way or another? Thanks. Kathy

Just a quick reply at the moment which is all I have time for...I've been to Cairns a number of times including in January. I've been to Darwin once, in August...so I don't know what it is like in January and others may be able to advise better on that. I love Cairns in January. I loved Darwin in August. Darwin is a very cool (!) town. I'd like to spend more time there. It seems to have a lot to offer in a low-key kind of way. I think it might be really great in January even in the Wet. There are a couple of great museums and a botanical gardens. I really did like Darwin.

I lived in Darwin for a year and I preferred the wet actually because with the rain came relief from the hot weather. Also all the waterfalls and swimming holes will be full too and Kakadu is at its best the I think. If you are lucky to see some of Darwin's electrical storms they alone are worth going for.

Before committing to Darwin, look at the plane schedules to and from. The only flight we could do out of Darwin was quite early in the morning, so we had to spend the night there after Kakadu, adding a day on to our itinerary.

Thanks everyone. I think Darwin will be added and I'm very exited about that. Electrical storms?? I've got to see those.

Also, I just checked the Qantas site and there are flights from Darwin to Perth direct non-stop at reasonable hours, one in particular at 14:20, with a Red E deal. So, I think that too will work. Not planning on booking anything yet, just wanted to know what the options were. I appreciate the input. Kathy
