Cradle Mtn to Launceston, Tassie

I'll be attending a conference at the Cradle Mtn Resort in a few weeks. After that I will be driving to overnight in Launceston before catching a flight to Melbourne the following morning.

Just wondering if there are any pit-stops or interesting sights enroute from Cradle Mtn to Launceston. Any worthy eateries, both on the way and in Launceston.

Also in Launceston, I intend to stay at the Sebel, any comments is welcomed.

Many thanks!

Chudleigh has 55 types of honey and lovely ice cream and the best nougat.

There are caves at mole creek near Chudleigh. A short walk (10 min) near Chudleigh takes you to the Alum Cliffs, which are fairly spectacular.

Sheffield is a town of Murals.

Deloraine has a giant tapestry of the region's history.

There are wineries, I think.

It is very pretty drive.

Spreyton is a fruit growing area - apples, cherries, plus juice and cider tastings

Spreyton also males some of the best cider too. But it is not really on the way to Launceston.

It is a hard choice. Honey, ice cream and nougat or Cider?

Its been a couple years now, but I remember stopping at a Raspberry farm for morning tea, and also a cheese factory where we stocked up on some delish snacks for our stay at Cradle Mountain Lodge. Its a gorgeous drive...enjoy!

Hotel Charles is great. A good place for breakfast is Fresh just down the road in Charles st.

Black Cow has the most amazing Tasmanian beef, try Grim Cape beef, amazing http://blackcowbistro.com.au/

I'd highly recommend the walk to Cataract Gorge and the Water Bird walk just out of Launceston.

One of the best national parks to see wombats is Narawntapu National Park. It's about an hour out of Launceston on the coast.

Will you have the time to drive north to sleepy-town Penguin, to find the penguin (photo op) by the waterfront at the Max Perry Reserve, buy some yummy bakery items three doors down, then drive towards Devonport and look in on the Don River Railway museum (and maybe take a ride on their restored train) www.donriverrailway.com.au ‎? On the way from there to Launceston you’ll see any number of fruit farms and quaint antique shops - much fun if you have the time to stop and look.

Thanks for all the advice.

Tried to book Black Cow Bistro, but closed for renovations until 29 August.

Anyone been to Siam Thai?

No I haven't been to Siam Thai, Thai is really good in Sydney (Sailor's Thai, Spice I am), I'm not so sure that would be a strong suit for Launceston.

Other restaurants that rated highly in Launceston, which we didn't go to so can't verify are:

Pierre's 88 George st; Still water (run by the Black Cow people) 2 Bridge st; Me Wah in Invermay.

Thanks again Susan7

Both Pierre and Stillwater are closed on Monday evenings. Perhaps will try the chinese eateries mentioned above or ask the hotel concierge.

Ended up eating at the Jail House Grill as recommended by our hotel. Casual dining, good steaks and all you can eat salad buffet. $39 for a 280g eye fillet, neither cheap nor expensive, you get what you paid for. Good service. Overall we had a good dining experience.

The Sebel Launceston is also a very nice hotel. The 1-bedroom suite is spacious, modern and bright. One block from the Civic Square, very convenient. Staff very helpful. On-site restaurant but we didn't try. Highly recommended.
