Coolangatta to Newcastle Selfdrive - where to stay?

Hi, my husband and I are travelling by car from Coolangatta (Gold Coast) down the Coast and have three nights before we head in land to Hunter Valley. Any suggestions where to stay that will be really memorable?
Byron Bay is interesting (if you avoid New Year!) A couple of days here might be good.

There are lots of resorts around Coffs Harbour (although Coffs itself is a bit ordinary!)

Do you have particular interests that you would like to consider?

If you've got a buck........one of the places at Wategos beach at Byron,
a B&B in Bellingen and the B&B in the lighthouse keepers house at Smoky Cape.

Hi Margo, thanks for that. We really want to chill and see the sights really, good views, good food is about it. I have heard that this B&B lighthouse at Smokey cape also sounds good too - is it worth it?
what about Port Stephens is that a place to stay or not?
Bye...

Nat Young has some nice apartments at Angourie that are reasonably priced, just near the famous surf of Angourie, and you can have dinner at "the Big Oyster" in Yamba ! Port Stephens or Tea Gardens is also a nice place to stay and look around.
