Coffee treasure hunt in Sydney and Melbourne
 

So, something I like to do when I'm in Paris is to do what I call a coffee treasure hunt.

I will look for great coffee places online and then I will seek them out - usually by walking/meandering my way to find them.

That way I get to see things along the way that I might not otherwise have seen (especially if it's an area that I haven't visited before) and as a bonus there's coffee at the end.

And because many of the new good coffee shops in Paris are based on Australian coffee (including Australian owners!) I think it would be fun to do this in both Sydney and Melbourne.

Ps and if you're looking for great coffee in Paris I have lots of tips. I've been to many! When I first started doing this I'd go to a new one each day. Now mostly I go back to my faves.

Hi, will swap you some ideas! We are visiting Sydney over Christmas (from Brisbane) and love to sit and have coffee so I will be keen to see any suggestions you get. AND we are planning a trip to France for 2018 including Paris. So any ideas you have we would be glad to hear!

Our idea of a great coffee shop is, of course, really good coffee but also something sweet to go with it, decent chairs (hate stools, if a cafe has only stools we keep walking) and help-yourself-water and newspapers are always a plus.

I like Laurent, there are a couple in Melbourne CBD but my favourite is in Little Collins St. It's on a corner with seating inside and out and gets very busy. Tip, there are toilets upstairs.

Koko Black is good, there are a few in the city but Royal Arcade is worth visiting on it's own and the cafe is a plus. You can sit upstairs at this store where it's quieter, or sit in the arcade. They specialise in chocolates but have coffee and sweet treats.

I can't help with specifics, but just thought I'd mention that in the seven years I lived in Australia, I didn't have a single bad flat white. Not one.

Whilst the good food guide has great cafes I wouldn't say they are just known for their coffee and most of them are not in CBD. I've been to Code Black, AU 97 (seriously hard to get into at weekend) and Moroccan Delicaccy - I would recommend them all . Especially the food at Moroccan - it's on the East Brunswick tram line .
Pelligrini espresso bar in CBD is one of the original coffee shops .
I love Brunettis in Carlton for its coffee and cakes - fab displays - also have other food .
Laurent - is an ok ordinary bakery/chain but not really known for its speciality coffee.
beanhunter.com has lists of coffee and cafes in CBD .
Seven seeds , Axil roasters and Marketlane are well known for their specialty coffee.
Also look at broadsheet.com.au - Melbourne coffee shops - many in CBD, Collingwood, Fitzroy , east Brunswick are on these lists .
Proud Mary - Collingwood has single origin coffee and great food.

I have not disappeared - I'm actually in Melbourne right now.

I will come back tonight and give you some thoughts.

The coffee has been fantastic everywhere. I only go to independent coffee places at home and I still can't find coffee this good. It tends to be bitter and maybe even a little bit burnt at home.
